Summary

The premise of this article is a reflection on the notion of narrativity in literature. An analysis of many excerpts from Rachilde’s novel, La Tour d’amour, published in 1899, allows us to expose many aspects tied to the concept of narrativity. Firstly, these predominantly descriptive excerpts from Rachilde’s novel question the opposition established by Philippe Hamon in his study entitled Du Descriptif (1993), in which he examines the difference between description and narration. Thanks to Philippe Hamon’s study, we observe that the problem with description lies in the fact that it is often associated to a character’s attributes, lexical amplification, preliminary discussion and suspensive temporality that can be perceived as a restriction or parallel to narration. In light of these considerations, we notice that description, rather than hindering a narrative reading of La Tour d’amour, introduces a narrative outline (Fontanille, 1998) which lures the reader into a passionate and cognitive read of this Rachildian novel (Baroni, 2006).
